What is your teaching philosophy?

Every child is unique in their own special way. Their ability to understand concepts may differ, but they are all capable of retention.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student, how they learn best, what they struggle with, and their educational goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Build confidence and relate the material in a fun way.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would give positive reinforcement and confidence boosters.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Go back to the drawing board. Re-think how I taught the concept and try other methods.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I have them re-read the passage, ask questions, have them write down what they didn't understand, and have a dictionary handy.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Starting with a review of content they do know, and then working up to the content they are struggling with. This gives the student an opportunity to acknowledge that they have the capacity to learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would tie in real world events and lingo.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would reassess by asking questions and giving a small assessment.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build up to the content needed to be learned. I would not give too much at one time. That can be frustrating!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I can see their work, hear them read, and see a writing sample.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I see what kind of learner my student is and go from there with my teaching techniques.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Dictionary, highlighters, reading passages, my personal notes, notes on the subject matter, and books.
