Hello Everyone,
I went to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and graduated in May 2016 with a B.S. in Environmental Engineering. I have a little sister (15 yrs. old) who I enjoy helping in her endeavor to become a life long learner. I figured since I am taking some time off that I would enjoy helping students achieve their own goals. This is because I understand how sometimes, classwork and concepts can be tough to grasp; however, with time and dedication any set back can be overcome. Learning should be an enjoyable experience, knowledge is the one thing no one can take away from you. I look forward to working with you!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
First, I would introduce myself, maybe try a couple of ice breakers. Then I would have the student tell me about what assignment they are working on, and I would try my best to identify where the student is struggling. Then I would try different methods of explanation and see which one resonates the best for the student's needs.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Through showing them methods and letting them work through problems on their own. Then, addressing where they may have gone wrong, as well as praising things they have done correctly.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Through appropriate levels of praise and also showing them demonstrations, whether it be on YouTube or in person. Students also like to see role models who make academia look hip and attractive so maybe teaching them about historical figures or hip modern scientists who have done things related to their interests.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try different approaches, sometimes stepping away from a problem for a moment can help a lot. Most importantly, to make sure they know that their struggle is a part of the learning experience and that in time they will grasp the concept as long as they stay dedicated.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Making sure to make the reading experience as interactive and appealing as possible. Thus I would make sure they are interested in the book we are reading or find a way for them to become interested and step by step making sure they are comprehending what is going on. This may be done by asking questions paragraph by paragraph or page by page. Also introducing the dynamics of writing, such as the importance of a topic sentence as well as a closing sentence.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Patience, kindness, visuals, and demonstration of concepts which can also be practical applications.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would have to get to know about different things the student is interested in first, and then try to find a way to incorporate it into the lesson. Maybe, reward systems such as homemade cookies.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Have them apply their knowledge to practice problems as well as defining the fundamental concepts of whatever lesson they are learning.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Praise where it is due, positive feedback, and constructive and kind criticism. Patience and smiles can do wonders. Also, enthusiastic high-fives help.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
First having them explain what they already know, then having them work through a problem alone and reviewing their work while simultaneously letting them tell me where they are getting stuck. Communication is key.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Just by staying kind and listening to where they are having difficulties. It is important to identify their needs, and then trying to find methods to explain the concepts that will allow them to have a deeper and fuller understanding.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I have not tutored before, but the internet has wonderful tools and demonstrations of concepts.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Hard work and dedication will lead to overcoming any fear and achieving any goal. No one can make you learn, but as long as you are willing to try to learn, there will always be someone there to try and help you.
