Certified Tutor

I have just finished my coursework for my MA in Public History from Royal Holloway University of London. I will be graduating in December with a distinction. I received my BA in History from Salisbury University, where I also minored in Anthropology, English, and Art.

I have loved history for as long as I can remember. Although, I know for a fact that it is due to one of my high school history teachers that I decided to pursue history professionally. He not only made the subject interesting and exciting through creative and interactive projects, but also allowed and encouraged us to think freely and begin to analyze sources rather than to merely memorize dates. I would love to be able to do the same for the students that I would be tutoring.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that anyone can succeed academically. It just takes dedication and finding how you best learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introductions, figuring out where the student is at versus where their class is, figuring out where they are struggling, discussing their study habits, and discussing how to proceed.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching them proper techniques for studying, how to take good notes, and how to analyze while reading will help to give them mastery over the course material. I also hope to either create an interest and/or further a passion for history!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help them to set a series of goals to reach, which will be stepping stones towards reaching their ultimate goal. I will also try to incorporate additional material that can add a bit of creativity and fun to the learning process.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Any student has the capacity to learn, and if they are having difficulty it is because the material is not being presented in a way that they can understand and retain. I would work with the student to determine how they best learn and retain information, and then help them to incorporate this into their studying.
