What is your teaching philosophy?

The NCLB Act places a high premium on math and science scores. While our nation's schools have seen some modest increases in these areas, scores in English, grammar, composition, and social studies remain static. Many students continue to have difficulty in composition, writing, and vocabulary. The ability to communicate effectively is key to any real success an individual will have in life, be it in academia or in the secular world. It is vital that our educational system not lose sight of this reality. Hopefully, I can help in these areas.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

The first step is to have the student give the subject some context. For example, what were some of the outstanding social problems occurring during the subject being considered? What were some of outstanding political issues, etc.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Usually, a brief assessment covering the main points, either written or verbal should be helpful. It would also be helpful for the student to take notes that can be used at a later time to reinforce the main points covered.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Always encourage your student to actively engage in dialog when covering any material. That way, you can ascertain the student's comprehension, as well as offer positive reinforcement as you move through the subject.
