What is your teaching philosophy?

Simply teach students to think outside of the box; teach them to approach a problem using critical thinking.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask them the areas in the accounting subject that they have problem comprehending. Ask a lot of questions to identify the critical areas that I need to focus on the most.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

First, identify the concept that they are having problems with. Next, I will explain the problem to them, and then apply the concept that I just discussed with him or her and do a number of related problems to reinforce the concept concretely.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Try to provide analogies and the kinds of things that this particular student can relate to.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break out the concept into the minutest detail, and show all of the steps so that everything will finally "gel" in his or her mind.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

When someone is reading a paragraph or a passage, you are not reading just words; you are reading to understand the "context" of the passage or paragraph, and you also want to make sure that the student knows the meaning of the words in the passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First, you have to establish rapport with the student, and convince him that you're on his or her side; and you want them to succeed and master the subject matter that is troubling them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I think you can start by giving an example of your own situation; when I was struggling with a school subject matter, and how, by motivation and perseverance, I was able to succeed in that subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Break down a difficult concept into as much detail as possible; give the big picture.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By giving him/her positive reinforcement and building up their self-esteem that they can do anything that they can put their mind and focus to.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Explain a difficult concept to them, solve a sample problem with him or her, and then give him homework to see how well he can do the homework, and he will be evaluated based on how well he did his homework.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Number one is you have to get a sense about the student and adapt yourself according to his or her personality.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would first prepare before coming to the tutoring session, and then during the session, discuss the theory and solve lots and lots of problems as it relates to the theory that I discussed with the student.
