What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first session would be to get to know the student and find out where the problem lies within the subject, and determine a starting point where the student is comfortable.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would help them develop the skills and confidence, guiding them through the process and modeling the skills necessary for success.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would motivate them through positive reinforcement and celebrating their achievements to that point in reaching their goal.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would help the student by direct explanation of the text they are having problems with, and then model ways I have used to increase my reading comprehension.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Getting to know the student's interests and relating the subject/topic to something that they can relate to.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would start at a point in the subject that the student had some success with, and bring the skills they learned there into the new concepts that they were having problems with.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use a post assessment and review at a later date to confirm that the knowledge was not forgotten once the section was over.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build students' confidence by continually working with skills and concepts that they have mastered, while exploring new and more difficult concepts.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would start with talking to the student about what they see as their concerns with the subject, and then use tools available to determine where their needs begin with a subject.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I would see what learning style worked best for the student and tailor the program toward the student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I would use hard copy assessments and also digital materials, where available.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My goal as a math teacher is to have the student understand and employ the theories of mathematics to solve problems and use the underlying logic in their daily lives.
