What is your teaching philosophy?
I want to ensure students understand why they are reaching certain answers, and not simply memorizing processes.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Begin with an introduction, and figure out what the student is trying to accomplish with their tutoring sessions. After that, I would lay out how I planned to help them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I think stressing the importance of understanding the process behind the work helps the student make progress on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I think encouragement, positive attitude, and goal setting will accomplish this.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would stay positive and encouraging, while trying to come up with useful training aids.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would teach them to slow down and ask themselves questions as they read about what is going on in the reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
A friendly introduction along with assessing their goals. Then, I like to make a plan for them to achieve their specific goals.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I think the most exciting and motivating thing is seeing success in their work, so constant motivation and goal setting is what I would like to implement.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would quiz them by asking conceptual questions to make sure they understand the information and don't simply have it memorized.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
A positive attitude is key to building confidence.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I will evaluate needs through a combination of questions and constant observation.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
This always takes some time because you must observe what the student needs. But based on what the student lists as their goals, I will adapt as soon as possible to their specific learning style.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I would like to use past tests, homework, and in-class examples.
