Certified Tutor

I am an undergraduate biology student, and preparing for medical school at the University of Oregon. Prior to transferring to the University of Oregon I attended South Texas College, where I attained my associates in biology and two years of work experience as a tutor. As a tutor, I have experience in math, science, and the humanities for college level courses and below. Personally, I prefer to take a more holistic approach to tutoring, often including aiding a student in learning how to solve each of their problems on their own. My goal is to support confidence, creativity, and a passion for learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Inspire curiosity.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Establish a comfortable relationship.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Encourage confidence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Take a different approach at explaining it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Break down individual vocabulary words, and find possible alternatives.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Make sure that they understand that I am going to be working through problems with them, not lecturing; huge difference

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find a connection with something that they enjoy doing outside of school; sometimes it helps to bring possible financial gain into perspective.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Visual, verbal, and kinesthetic learning aids tend to be my go to tools and methods.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Show them that it's okay to be wrong... more than that... it's good to be wrong. That is how I learn the majority of what I am studying in school.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Simple... just ask them how they feel on a subject, and maybe probe their knowledge with a few questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It completely depends on the situation.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on the subject; my favorite is normally a white-board.
