What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching style is student-centered and enthusiastic. I emphasize inquiry-based instruction in my classroom, which focuses on guiding the students to discover solutions to problems through critical and analytical thinking. I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences, they will not only retain information longer, but they will also become more confident in their abilities.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It's important to set some goals so that we can work towards accomplishing them. Knowing what the student's strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to learning or the subject matter will help create a baseline for these goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Start with examples, and then, through guided practice, work towards independent problem solving as the student becomes more comfortable with the material.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Seeing progress keeps motivation high. Creating short term goals and scaffolding learning will help students see that progress and keep them motivated through the obstacles.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Start with texts that interest them to build their comfort with reading. Work on annotation strategies that would help with active reading and, therefore, would increase comprehension.
