Certified Tutor
I am a graduate of Hollins University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and a minor in History. During my summers I worked as a teaching assistant in Reading and Math at Oakland School, which specialized in helping students with learning disabilities and average to above average intelligence thrive in school. I also was a robotics instructor at Virginia Space Flight Academy and interned as a teaching assistant for academic, standard, honors, and AP level science students. While I enjoy tutoring a wide variety of topics I really enjoy talking about science and history with students. However, as much as I enjoy those two subjects, I find teaching math to struggling students the most rewarding. When I was young I struggled with math in school, but I worked hard and moved past that obstacle. Now I like to help guide others trying to get through math. I feel like clear communication is the key to learning and that getting students to translate knowledge or skills into their own internal vocabulary is the best way for them to truly learn and improve. In my spare time I enjoy fencing (saber), sewing, trivia competitions, and monster movies from the 50s.

What is your teaching philosophy?
If a student is trying as hard as possible, then they are already above average.
