What is your teaching philosophy?

Getting to know students, their academic background, and their learning style is the first step. I tailor my approach to what suits the student and subject best. I personally find that a combination of applied practice problems, discussions, and images works well most of the time. Above all, I remain patient and positive.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to start by asking a few questions to get more information on the student's goals (big and small). I also ask what areas they think they need to improve on. From there, I assess their baseline knowledge by going over a content/course guide together. Finally, a short practice test can help me evaluate their test-taking ability and comfort with the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

An independent learner is curious and patient. Students must be able to locate quality information on their own and understand that learning takes time. I try to show students how to find information on their own, and I encourage them to spend time working outside tutoring sessions. Practice tests are very important for developing independence.
