I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

My goal as a tutor is not only for my students to walk away understanding the concepts that they are having trouble grasping, but to try and relate those concepts to the students goals and aspirations. Lessons and concepts will be much better retained when a student is able to understand them through their own hobbies and passions.

My name is John Allar, and I am a recent graduate of the University of Florida. I received a Bachelors of Science in Horticultural Sciences, with a specialty in Organic Crop Production. I love farming for my friends and family because my Fiance and I feel we are working with nature and promoting a healthy sustainable lifestyle. My passions are sustainability and homesteading, and I enjoy many hobbies in my spare time. I have played lacrosse for many years and was previously part of the University of Florida Men's Lacrosse team, as well as the Palm Coast Sparrows Men's lacrosse team. I was also the Head Coach for the Stetson University Men's Lacrosse Team for two years in Deland, Florida.

I look forward to helping my students grow in the subjects they are struggling with, garnering new friendships, and learning from those I help along the way.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Successful teaching stems from creating a comfortable learning environment, where students feel like they can fully engage in the learning process through frequent questioning and discussion. The teacher must be able to understand why the student is not understanding a concept and develop a unique plan for the individual to overcome their hurdles.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session with a student, I would lay the foundation of the learning environment I want to have with the student. I would get to know the student and really try to connect on a personal level. I would try to make the student feel as comfortable as possible with me so that we do not run into any communication errors that would hinder the tutoring process.
