I am a graduate of the University of Albany. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Biology. After taking extensive math and science courses, I later realized that anyone can learn anything through practice and repetition. Majoring in biology was not easy and most of my time was spent teaching myself the material. Independent studying is good because you come up with different ways to learn the material, which is helpful when teaching someone else. The rest of my time was spent participating in study groups, where colleagues and I would teach each other. From my previous experience as a student and as a tutor, I have learned that understanding a subject depends greatly on how the material is presented. That is why it is important for me to be able to adapt to the student's preferred teaching style or one that they are most comfortable with. Once you figure that out, learning becomes fun!

What is your teaching philosophy?
Practice and repetition is key.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would evaluate them to determine their strengths and weaknesses.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would assign homework problems that they have to do on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would come up with a reward system.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would find a different way to present the material.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Have them watch more movies with subtitles, in addition to their tutor sessions.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Visual learning and relating concepts to everyday activities is very helpful.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would try to make it fun with lots and lots of humor.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Homework problems and verbal explanations.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Reward them when they are correct and even when they are wrong.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would give them a practice test at their first session.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I would focus more on the student's weaknesses and move onto another topic once they are 100% confident with the topic they are struggling in.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use a mini whiteboard, images, pictures, camera phones, and window paint.
