What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
After a brief conversation about their attitude towards school, I would administer a diagnostic assessment to determine the child's current levels of achievement.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Scaffolding material with success allows a student to become successful.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Consistent feedback and opportunities to be successful assist in motivating children. Using data to graph growth also assists in confidence and motivation.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Looking at previously learned material is an effective method of remedy.; usually one concept builds on another.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Decoding is the building block of reading comprehension. We begin there, and then look towards the process of their thinking, not the result.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Real world connections to the material are my primary method for engaging children.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Exit tickets, formative assessments and informal observation are my methods for gauging student understanding.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
A grade level diagnostic assessment addresses areas of strength and those of need.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
In language arts, I use a grade-level exemplar, a teacher-created piece, and additional leveled texts. For math, I create my own worksheets.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student needs an opportunity to feel nurtured, understood and successful.
