As a Biochemistry and English double major who graduated from Hillsdale College, I am well-versed in a number of subjects and would love to tutor you in mathematics or science or help you to become more proficient as a reader and writer in the humanities.
I love exploring and adventures, and I believe that some of the best exploring can happen in the world right around you. All of creation is filled with such wonder! Oftentimes, your subject matter at school is filled with fascinating aspects that you have yet to uncover; my tutoring style reflects that notion--I will guide you to a place where you then will have all of the tools to take the next step forward, but I will not do that for you. You must be willing to work, but I am very happy and capable to assist you along the way. I recently finished my first year of teaching sixth grade at a charter school which seeks to furnish "willing students" with a "rigorous education in the humanities, sciences, and the arts with such instruction in the virtues as will best develop the mind and character of its pupils," and I will seek to do the same here at Varsity Tutors.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Students best learn truths through guided self-discovery. In this method, the teacher gives the student an objective and reminds him or her about what he or she already knows in the situation and the tools he or she needs to get to the next place, assisting the student further only when necessary. The student will achieve mastery of the subject through independent deduction, using the tools given to him or her by the teacher.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
First, I would assess what the student already knows about the subject and what our goals would be during our tutoring time. After that, we would probably begin going over practice problems or writing samples.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By encouraging the student to find and maintain excellent study habits and organizational skills.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By encouraging them with the beauty and excitement of what he or she already knows and reminding him/her of the wonderful feeling of achievement that comes with understanding a difficult concept.
