What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning the core concepts so every problem is solvable, not memorized.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Work a few problems to find their strengths and weaknesses in the course material. Set up a schedule that will allow them to be successful.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Building their confidence is a key part. For me it was learning there is more than one way to solve a given problem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Showing them their strengths. Overcoming the areas they struggle with and letting them see they can do it.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First of all, talk about what is being asked and make sure there is no question about the question. Then show them multiple approaches on how to solve the problem

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Blank paper, whiteboard, and pens.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would read to them and discuss. Then I have them read the same information and discuss sentence by sentence, then by paragraphs, and then by pages.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would be excited about the area I'm teaching to them, and also connect it with what is going on in the world and their own life to show them the importance.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Discussions and quizzes.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By showing them they have the ability to be successful within that subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Communicate with them about what they like and don't like. Observe them when they are solving a problem, and see what is hard for them to complete and what they find easy.
