Certified Tutor

I'm a licensed chiropractor in the state of Oklahoma. I'm originally from Ardmore, Oklahoma. I received my bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry from East Central University in 2009. After that, I moved to Dallas to attend Parker University College of Chiropractic where I obtained a bachelor's in Health & Wellness, a bachelor's in Anatomy and my Doctorate of Chiropractic. During all my years of study I tutored underclassmen in various subjects in a one-on-one setting. These subjects included algebra, biology, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, physics, gross anatomy, biochemistry and rad physics. After graduating as Salutatorian in 2012, I moved back home and joined a chiropractic practice here in Ardmore, OK. In 2013, I began teaching part-time as an adjunct instructor at Southern Oklahoma Technology Center, teaching medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Now that I own my own practice and it has stabilized, I find myself missing my students and seeing that metaphorical light turn on in their eyes when they finally understand a concept. After all my years in school, I definitely know how to study. Not only will you understand the concepts fully, I will give you the tools to better study future subjects you will encounter.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I'm a very visual person. Seeing concepts drawn out in an organized fashion always helps. The best way to learn things that are pure memorization is to "learn one, do one, teach one.” Once the student can teach my why a certain concept exists, I have properly done my job.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In our first session, you should expect some homework. I will teach you HOW to study, not just tell you TO study. There is a huge difference here. Your homework will consist of developing study materials to further your learning. You will begin to better understand the concepts during our first session, but beyond that, you'll be able to better understand all the concepts as my study tools will help you manipulate the information in a way that YOU understand. If you're willing to put in the time, you will absolutely see the results.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

With the specific instructions and study tools I give you, you can take any information in any subject and manipulate it to a form that you can understand. You will no longer become "bogged down" in the information, you will understand how to take the major concepts and extrapolate my tools to include all the minor concepts in between.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

This is why I give you homework. Giving you homework you just "read" didn't help me in school. Reading isn't motivating to me. However having a small pile of simplified study tools that you yourself have done is quite an accomplishment. You'll see your motivation in a material sense. This will help motivate you tremendously.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Call me a nerd, but I carry around a small white dry erase board just for this purpose. I have NEVER encountered a skill or concept that I could not DRAW out a picture or diagram. Most students are visual or kinesthetic learners, so this process helps greatly.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will teach you key words and phrases to pay attention to when you read your textbook and notes. The wonderful thing about science and math is that you do not need a great amount of comprehension to be super successful. I will teach you how to pick out a specific concept and then add onto it in a constructive but simple manner that you'll understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Reviewing for a test with my students helps a little for one session. This is not how I tutor. I tutor to teach you the skills so that you will be successful in any subject and in any school.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Once you have completed the "homework" that I give you, you will bring it to the following session and we make a game of it. Somewhat like jeopardy. There are treats or other goodies at the end if you do well. Life is too short not to have a little fun!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

At the end of most sessions, you will be assigned "homework.” Next time we meet, you'll bring the end product of this homework and we will make a game of it. I have found this is the best way to ensure the student not only knows the material, but also has put in the time to develop the study tools needed to be successful in school.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

In science, all the concepts build off of one another. So if you're struggling with a concept today, we will revisit a previous related concept and I will help you understand exactly how they relate. This always helps my students build their confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate your needs by talking to you. I assume you signed up for tutoring for a reason, that this certain subject is difficult for you. Or that you're not doing as well in a subject as you think you should be. This takes communication between us. If you would rather, you are welcome to request a written evaluation of the subject matter that you can give to me at the first session so I know where you stand. Your choice.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Everyone is different. That is why there are tons of study materials on the market. Getting to know you and how you "tick" will allow me to tailor my tutoring for your needs. But again, this take communication.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My main tool is a white dry-erase board with my markers. This helps us take a whole chapter of text and narrow it down to one single concept at a time. Once you full understand what is on the white board, we erase and move on to the next concept.
