I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Teaching is my passion. Teaching can take a bad day and turn it into a fantastic one. I joined the Air Force at 17 years old and completed a Physics major from the United States Air Force Academy. I was excited to serve my country and am very thankful I got that opportunity. What I learned most from it though was that it was not my passion and I separated from the Air Force to set out to find it. Teaching math and physics excites me and motivates me. My goal is to instill this love and amazement in my students through my love of teaching it.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Love it and your students can only benefit from your excitement.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and give my backstory. Ask the student about themselves; find a connection!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Ask questions, lead them to the right method/answer instead of telling them. Practice the method, not necessarily the problem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think just being excited everyday can be contagious.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Teach it in a different way. Ask a fellow educator or utilize the internet to show it using different words I may not have come up with.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Find out where their problems begin; oftentimes it is not with the current work.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Excitement is contagious. However, letting them know I understand where they are coming from helps; for instance, I really struggle with History and Political Science. Knowing the tutor has weaknesses too can be helpful.
