Seibou: Alexandria tutor

Certified Tutor

I'm originally from Togo. I moved here during the summer 2011. I came here with no English background but I was able to speak English by the end of the summer and started my university classes.

I majored in Mathematics and Economics, and while going to school I tutored Math and General Statistics for 3 years. I first started tutoring students in 2012 at Northwest Missouri State University, aiding students that were doing poorly in their classes. Then I moved to the Math Lab in the same school where students can come in for help whenever they want. I loved it. I discovered then that my passion is teaching.

I told you my experience to start off to let you guys know that nothing is impossible and Math is FUN. You just need a teacher to make it that way for you and you will love it.

I tutored Math and General Statistics for 3 years.

I grew up speaking French. French is my native language.

I will show you ways to make math fun for you.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching is my passion and I believe in installing this passion by being a lifetime model to my students. I'm a person that believe that the relationship between the teacher and his or her student determine in a huge proportion the level of understanding between them. I think every teacher should have a professional relationship with each of their students. I also support a teaching place with a fun environment.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Usually, at my first sessions, I try to know the student a little bit. I also try a few problems to see how well they understand the material, and come up with a way they can understand it better.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Being an independent learner is a bit difficult for students that aren't that mature. Usually the easy way is to give them homework that incites them or requires them to learn new materials.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will find a way to explain it to them. Usually people understand things in a different way. It is the tutor's responsibility to know how to explain things to their students.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I let them take their time and read through all of it.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Doing things together. Making sure that they know the material first.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Usually we say we are struggling in something when we cannot do it. The easy way to make them love it is to help them do it easily.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The reading of the material, a couple of application problems, and then a problem that they will do by themselves.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By assuring them that it is not difficult as they think it to be.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I go over a lot of problems with them. At every session I write down whatever they need improvement in.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By adapting to whatever makes them comfortable. Another way is that there are multiple ways to get to an answer. I will show them all the ways I know well, so they can choose the method that suit them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Notebooks, pencils, pen and a calculator if necessary.
