I have worked as an after care counselor at a charter school, and have been tutoring for five years. I also am a peer mentor at the Florida International University, where I facilitate learning and teach classes to freshmen students. I love teaching people and helping them understand concepts they once found difficult. When I tutor, I try to make things relatable to the person that I am speaking to.
Extra curricular activities that I participate in are the Biomedical Engineering Society, Florida Engineering Society, Society for Women in Engineering, Chemistry Society, Society of Physics Students, and Toastmasters. I am also the Secretary of the Archery Club.
I know many shortcuts in math because I am currently studying Biomedical Engineering, and am also pursuing a minor in Chemistry. Math comes easily to me, and I want other people to understand it as well. Many people are afraid of math--some get clammy just thinking of it--but I would like to alleviate those worries and make my students confident in the topic.
I have tutored English and proofread many essays for the past five years. I believe it's important to inspire students and brainstorm with them as they write. By taking students through the writing process, I believe they can then learn better. I am a flexible tutor and am always willing to help. I know many topics and am always trying to learn more. What is your teaching philosophy?
To cater to the individual needs of the students. When I teach I want the pupil to understand and not be afraid of the subject.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would evaluate the child in the subject to see what are their strengths and weaknesses.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By teaching a student different study skills.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By helping them see their progress in the subject.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would show the student different ways to learn the topic. For example, students love shortcuts in Math. Also, I would do study guides with them.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would help them with vocabulary too, because many students struggle with reading because they do not understand what they are reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
To start from the beginning. Even if a student already knows the topic, they become confident and comfortable with me because they already have a background in the subject.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I like to do different worksheets with students or interactive workbooks. Ways to engage a student depends on the grade level, and the student themselves.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would do a mock exam and review their homework with them.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
If a child knows something, through repetition, they would feel more confident and remember it better.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Usually in the first few sessions I understand what the student needs. With a pre-test, I see their strengths and weaknesses, and then I can move forward with them.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
When I tutor ESOL students, I have to adapt to their needs because they learn more through repetition. I might also need more time with them because they could be slow learners.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I bring a notebook, pencil with eraser, different color pens, workbooks and worksheets for the students.
