What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Review previous exams and current school notes.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Applying concepts to real life situations can be incredibly rewarding. Using this technique can motivate students to learn on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
The pace of learning must be matched and customized to each and every student. The correct pace can discourage fatigue and confusion, making learning fun and rewarding.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Taking one step back can often times reap tremendous benefits before trying to take two steps forward.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Practice is the easiest way to master a language. For example, reading a newspaper can make reading seem interesting and pertinent to the student.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Focusing on where the student has the most difficulty.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Providing a real life example of the topic in question that relates to the student's hobbies and interests.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Mock exams are by far the most powerful tool. They can be created easily and on the fly if the teacher is practiced.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Focusing on the student's strengths for a session can reinvigorate confidence.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
A quick look at the syllabus created by the student's teacher can show me what the student needs to focus on to perform well.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Individuals learn in different ways and at different paces. A mentor that can customize this pace specifically for a student can be a powerful asset.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Any technology available should be utilized. For example, in biology there are many easy to understand animated diagrams available online.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Keeping the material relevant, engaging, interesting, rewarding, and most importantly fun should be the foundation of all teaching.
