I am a freshman at Johns Hopkins University, double majoring in Neuroscience and East Asian Studies. My previous experiences in tutoring include teaching peers in math, science, and German as a part of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Delta Epsilon Phi. I have also thoroughly enjoyed giving private violin lessons to beginner and intermediate players and mentoring robotics teams at a local middle school, where I had a chance to get to know my students well. Through these experiences, I have come to believe that developing a relationship with students to motivate them is a key part of tutoring, and also is the aspect that makes it fun and fulfilling. In my free time, I enjoy playing the violin and the piano, cooking, and playing boardgames in my free time.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
See where they are with their current skills and set up a long-term plan, if we have such an arrangement, and start with some concepts they need immediate help with.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would try to guide my students through the processes and make sure that they can repeat it by themselves.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Developing a close relationship with students is key. I would also try to get them to think of the future and remind them of their personal goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to explain the concept in several different ways and try to relate it to something they are familiar with. In other words, I would try to personalize the information.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
There are certain tips to use in reading comprehension, such as isolating and focusing on key sentences and building up vocabulary, that I would try to help them with.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Thinking about how it relates to their personal goals and telling them about my personal experiences could help.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have the student teach it back to me or give them similar example problems that exemplify the same concept.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would help them practice problems in that subject and remind them of how far they have come.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would take into account the student's self-evaluation and the student's short-term and long-term goals.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
The student's needs would affect my teaching speed and how in depth I might go into certain concepts, along with what strategies I might teach them.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that inspiring personal motivation through a personal teaching style is key.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like to start with more general problems and concepts to gauge a student's current level and then go more in depth.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I would use previous textbooks and prep books that I have used, along with any materials the student is currently working with.
