Certified Tutor

I have received my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology from the University of Houston. I will be attending TWU's master program in occupational therapy starting in the fall of 2016. Math has been and will always be my strongest subject. I love math, and I am willing to spend time covering the basics that will help you solve the problems you find difficult. Currently, my strongest math subjects are middle school math, pre-algebra, and algebra. My belief is that repetition is key when mastering math problems. In my spare time, I love to workout, play with my dog, and try DIY projects.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Repetition is key!!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would go over basic materials to see what you understand the most.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would advise students to take some time out of the day to practice on problems that relate to what they are learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Everything you do now until you finish school will help you in life.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find another problem that is related to the concept and break down the steps of the problems.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Underline or highlight key words.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would come up with games that they could relate to.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Break down each problem step by step. Creating formula sheets could also help them.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would help build a student's confidence by helping him/her to create a strong foundation in that subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by gauging what part of the problem is the most difficult to them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use pencil, paper, and a calculator. I would bring external incentives if needed such as stickers or pictures.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Going over basic material or the foundations.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I work on the materials they struggle with the most and keep practicing those type of problems until they understand it.
