Certified Tutor

I am a third year at Drexel University majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in communications concentrating in science and technical writing. I enjoy activities that allow me to grow as well as help others, which is why I love tutoring math and French. Having family in France, tutoring French helps me practice for when I visit as well as create a foundation and better understanding for my students. I like to approach everything in life with multiple perspectives because it is the best way to grow and understand. I try to bring this way of thinking to my students because there are so many different ways to get to the same answer. In my spare time, I like to sew, read and write, and attend concerts.

What is your teaching philosophy?

There is more than one way to approach things. Some ways may work well for some people, but not work for all. I will help you find the way that suits you most.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'll ask about their current study habits: the habits they've found helped and the habits that do not work well. What kind of learner are they? Then, we will work accordingly.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My tutoring method is more like a guideline; students figure out the problems independently with pushes as needed. It will transition to independent working very easily.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would remind them that this is for them, their education, and their growth. This is all for their benefit. Not only will it help them in their studies, they can apply the methods they've learned to other aspects of life. I am there to be the help that they want and need. They just need to want it as well.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find the root of what they do not understand. To learn a skill or concept, you need a solid foundation and then you build upon it.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

It's all about communication. Working with the student to find what works out best for them is the most successful. I adjust to what works best for them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask them comprehension questions periodically as they go further into a concept. I would ask if they know why something is or why you would do it in that manner.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would use examples from a book or an online source. I could even make up my own problems or scenarios to suit the session.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I tell them to take it slowly. If you take it in chunks, it's less overwhelming. Re-reading is definitely okay, and it's fine if you don't get it the first time. Read it over and write down what you think it means or if it is relevant.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would be encouraging. Every correct answer and every mistake is a step towards getting better. I would let them know they're doing well and that they are getting better, or that they can if they try.
