Adam

Certified Tutor

I am currently a second year college student at Truman State University, where I am working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in supply chain management. I am and have always been passionate about teaching and learning in small groups, because that is how I learn best. Throughout my high school and college careers I have worked to form small, focused study groups with my peers to help maximize all of our grades and retained information. This has given me a unique, goal oriented teaching style to help students improve their performance on tests. My favorite subject to teach is the ACT, because most of the content and many of the test taking skills covered by the ACT are applicable to general performance in other areas and tests. By helping students prepare for the ACT, I can help them build strength in a variety of academic strategies. Aside from the ACT, I love to teach economics, both micro and macro, business, algebra 1 and algebra 2. In general, I like to tutor students by using what they already know as a foundation, strengthening that foundation, and building on that foundation at a pace that is comfortable for the student. Outside of academia, my hobbies include playing table top RPG's, video games, and playing the guitar. I also love Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During my first session with students, I like to discover three things: what the student's interested in, what the student's skill level is, and what the student's motivation for attending tutoring is. This helps me to work with the student to set goals for improvement and provide motivation for the student to reach that goal.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, I would backtrack and figure out specifically what the student is having difficulty understanding. Sometimes simple misunderstandings can cause major difficulties for students. Next, I would work through a practical example with the student. Then I would have the student walk me through the problem, and lastly I would recheck the student's understanding.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension is a difficult area to tackle conceptually. I would try to help a student improve in this area by demonstrating a specific reading strategy with a passage that the student can comprehend, and then showing how the strategy works the same way in a more difficult passage.
