Mark

Certified Tutor

Though I have not graduated from college, I am an excellent tutor because I have prior tutoring experience and have exhibited excellence in math throughout my scholastic career. I love to help others, and especially help others do their best. I am always open to help someone in need of help. I have helped friends and family increase their performance in math ever since I was in the 8th grade. I feel that any student can achieve anything if they are equipped with the correct tools and skills. I work well with others, and I can connect with almost anybody. I am a natural leader. I'm a great motivator, and I have given several motivational speeches throughout my career. My tutoring goals are simple: to equip students with skills to achieve their own goals, to brighten their day, and to encourage students and let them know it is possible that they can (and will) excel in math, or any other subject, with my help.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that any student can increase their knowledge and performance in any aspect in life. If you equip the student with the tools, skills, and practice, I believe the student can and will achieve their aspirations.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First I may ask the student a little about themselves so they would be comfortable around me. I would ask them what they're struggling with and what they're good at. Afterwards, I would help them understand subject matters that they're struggling with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach him strategies to solve problems, and also show him how I learned when I had troubles in math. I often went to YouTube videos for explanation in a subject I did not understand

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to give him as many examples and as many different ways possible to try the problem. I feel repetition is the best way. Let the student try it on his or her own, and then jump in when needing help on a problem.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would tell the student that I wasn't always the best at everything I've done, but with the proper help and perseverance I was able to do anything that I set my mind to. Any student can and will excel with the proper help. I would also make the tutoring session a little fun, so the student will enjoy learning, which will then propel them to want to continue to learn and get better at whatever they're struggling with.
