Certified Tutor

I am currently a Sophomore Chemical Engineering Major studying at Howard University. With years of extensive experience in tutoring all ages, I am delighted to serve as a Varsity Tutor. While my strongest subjects include Mathematics (all subjects up to Pre-Calculus) and Computer Science, I also have experience tutoring English, Writing, and Verbal Reasoning. I have successfully tutored middle school students preparing to enter private high schools, high school students, elementary students, and adults. As a tutor, my primary concern is learning how a tutee learns, and teaching to their learning style. My ultimate goal is to prepare the tutee to attack tasks on their own, so as to become independent learners in the future.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Allow natural creativity to flow, and then adjust.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student and test him/her to gauge where the student is with regard to mastering the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Allow the student to thoroughly undergo the thinking process. Employ concept-based teaching: teaching a student how to approach a problem instead of just telling them how to solve it.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Find out what the student's interests are and try to relate the subject at hand to her/his interests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Ask the student to go through their thought process step-by-step in solving a problem, understand the root of the issue, and then solve said issue.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Ask the student to read in intervals and to explain what they've read (in their own words) at the end of each interval.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Testing, asking questions that motivate the student to think, being "stingy" with answers.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Relate it to their interests.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

After teaching the concepts, allow the student to solve problems on their own, only intervening when she/he asks.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I observe their learning style and compare it with how the material they need to learn is being relayed to them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pencil, paper, calculator, and my computer (if necessary).

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Repetition; testing; explaining; games.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Changing the tutoring style based on the student's learning style.
