Jobin: Massachusetts tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a 2015 graduate of the University of Houston currently holding a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology/Health Professional's Sciences. While my focus of subjects was Biological Sciences, I have extensive knowledge in all subjects including , but not limited to elementary math, Pre-algebra, Algebra, English Composition (K-12). The student that I worked with in the past have been high-schoolers although I have worked with college-age students. I am looking to share my passion of learning with others by tutoring.

My personal approach to tutoring is that I believe that with all students, it is not a merely a lack of knowledge that a student is unable to do well, but a base that needs to be built: something, which requires focusing on the person him or herself. Working with students one-on-one has been very an enjoyable experience for me. In my past experiences tutoring, I have realized teaching may require approaching subject material from many different angles. This has helped me to become more sensitive to the needs of others. Ultimately, I have a passion and motivation to see my students grow academically and become intuitive and independent thinkers and learners. This is possible for any student with time, practice, and hard work.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Provide strategies that inspire the student to learn the concept in a way that is relatable and efficient.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Provide strategies to clear the student's mind and focus.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

During the first session with a new client, I like to get to understand the students daily academic regimen. From there, I can target specific goals to reach in terms of strategic planning. From there, I devise ways to inspire the student to always push themselves forward in their learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?

In order to help me more effectively prepare for each lesson, please do not hesitate to let me know what you or your child needs help on before the lesson. I have a flexible schedule so I can provide additional tutoring time if needed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My tutoring method is to: 1.) Assess, 2.) Teach, 3.) Reassess, and 4.) Reteach as necessary.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I spend a good amount of time going over terminology and ways to remember and differentiate between terms. I also try to help you establish a framework so that you can see how all the information you are learning fits together. My goal is to not only help you in your current class, but to help you establish a system that will help you in your future biology classes.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I show students how to figure out what is the most important information so that they can more quickly master the material.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make sure that instruction is appropriate by utilizing data to match instruction to their needs. Keep a quick, but appropriate pace. Finally, I like to change activities frequently to prevent a learning plateau.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

More often than not, students have gaps in their learning. A good way for me to figure our where students are fumbling is by asking questions.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Smile when talking to the student as this builds the student's confidence. Address the points that they have already mastered first to show progress, then attack problems using previous knowledge.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Determine the student's need for them to succeed in the subject. Strategies will vary, but I always remember to engage the student to further probe areas that require work.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By always being aware of the differences in understanding and learning between the student and me. Patience is key, as I remember how difficult it was to master a subject the first time around.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Bring anything your child needs help with or wants to advance on. Don't waste tutoring sessions on homework unless help is necessary. These will include 5 sharpened pencils with durable, yet paper friendly erasers, a protractor, ruler, extra sheets of note book paper, and a graphing calculator.
