I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

As a medical student, I tutor because I know that we all need a little help sometime. There have been many moments as a student that I felt overwhelmed by too many facts, but in those moments I've always made it through because I found someone to talk it through with. Instead of drowning in a sea of facts, my personal learning philosophy is to find the big concepts and fill in the facts from there. I love watching students "get it"-- its exciting. Learning shouldn't be about memorization but understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During our first session, I like to get to know you. What learning strategies have worked well for you in the past? What are your goals for this class? What is your goal for this week? I want to work to help you reach your goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Not every student learns best through lecture. Not every student understands by reading the book. If a student is having difficulty with a concept, then maybe it's time to approach it from a different direction. Let's draw it out. Let's use a metaphor. Let's take a deep breath and relax.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

As they say in medicine, "see one, do one, teach one." To review the material we will talk through concepts, then work through some practice problems. By the end of it, you should be able to teach me!
