Certified Tutor

School has always been an adventure for me. I had loved it since my very first day of school when I was fours years old. I believe that great teachers create an environment that students want to come back to and that students will thrive in. I was fortunate to have such high standards and loving teachers that encouraged me to want to learn as well as become a teacher myself. I will continue and pass on the love I have for teaching and learning to my students so that they will flourish in their studies as well as I did.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to create multiple experiences for a student to not only learn and thrive, but to have fun while doing so.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I will get to know the student's educational needs as well as where they excel to better understand their educational background and help with their educational future.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

To help a student become an independent learner, I will ask them to show me how they would complete a problem. I will then take the problem step-by-step with them so that they will be able to figure out future problems on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To keep a student motivated, I will make the learning process fun and entertaining. I will take each problem and analyze it and configure it to suit their interests. If study breaks are needed, then we can do that as well.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I will break the problem down into separate parts and take each one slowly. I can also compare the skill or concept to a related topic to better understand it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

To help a student with reading comprehension, I will sit next to them, sound out each word with them, identify the word, and define what the word means in a simple sentence. We will then practice with that word so that the word will be easily identified in the future.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategy that I find most successful is to try to understand the problem from the student's perspective. Every child learns differently, and I will change my teaching strategies according to the student's needs.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

To get a child excited with a subject that they are struggling in is to find a subject that they are engaged in and relate the struggling subject to the exciting subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

There are several techniques I can use to be sure that a student understands the material. I could quiz them, use flashcards, or better yet - practice makes perfect, and just use repetition.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

To build a child's confidence in a subject, I would get them excited about the subject. I could start them with an easier topic and work our way up to more difficult topics. I will also continuously use positive reinforcement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

To evaluate a student's needs, I observe them on how they solve a problem and if they are able to get to a certain point before they reach the end of the problem.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to each student's needs by acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses and giving them my undivided attention to succeed in their studies.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

There are multiple tools I can use to complete a tutoring session. I can use tools around the house like coins, blocks, or a clock, or use technology to help solve problems without giving away the answer directly.
