Zaka

Certified Tutor

For the past three years now, Ive been able to practice my dream. Since I was a young boy, I had always looked up to all the doctors that worked day and night to help those that were far less fortunate. I finally managed to achieve my goal in 2012, when I received my M.D. from Punjab Medical College. However, I did not want to stop at just obtaining the degree; I wanted to share my knowledge as well. From the year 2011 to 2012, I tutored nursing students so that they could succeed as well.

During the past year, Ive been doing clinical research at the University of Maryland Medical Center, in the Department of Neuro-critical care, and also part time at Johns Hopkins University. I have taken and passed the USMLE Step 1, and I have previous experience with the MCAT as well. Since a lot of my time was devoted to studying for these exams in the past, I have gained experience when it comes to working under pressure and have now developed several test-taking strategies. Due to my medical background, I also have extensive knowledge when it comes to basic sciences such as Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. At the same time, my main goal continues to be to spread my knowledge to others, which is why I spend my free time tutoring fellow students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will listen to the student and their complaints. I believe being a good listener makes you a great teacher.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By setting up small goals with the student, I can teach them how to do small things independently and then they can learn to do big things on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

With positive reinforcement. I will always give a positive response to the student. This helps the students stay motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will give daily life examples to make it really easy for the student. If they still have hard time, I will tell them to be patient. With time, once they are able to comprehend other concepts, I can help them to understand this concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I ask them to read smaller reading passages until they improve in their comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Be a good listener.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would talk more about the subject to remove the student's fear.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Simplifying the core concept of the subject.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By helping the student learn more about the subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By listening to the student, and then assessing what it is they are having difficulty with.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I will quickly change my technique if the students are not feeling comfortable with my teaching style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Just a copy and a pen is good enough to cover the concepts.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Love for all hatred for none, and listening to my students.
