Jakobi

Certified Tutor

I graduated college with a bachelor of science degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. I am currently applying for medical school and working towards a masters in public health. I have experience working with many different ages ranging from middle school to college level students. Most of my experience is with math and sciences as well as test prep for English ACT exams. I can tutor in math (pre calculus, trigonometry, algebra, geometry) sciences (biological sciences, chemistry, physics) and English. My favorite subject to tutor is algebra because it is like a puzzle, and who does not like a good puzzle? My teaching philosophy consists of learning about the students' interests and providing a way to relate their interests into the work they are doing so it can be more meaningful to them. I have found that the more a subject means to a student personally, the better they do in the subject. So, in this way it is possible to turn a subject weakness into a strength and passion.

Outside of academia, I played college football for 4 years at Princeton University. I also enjoy watching and playing football, basketball, soccer, and horseback riding. In addition to sports, I also have musical interests and have been playing classical piano for 16 years. In addition to this, I enjoy reading mystery and murder mystery books and watching shows in this subject.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every subject is of interest to you as long as you know how it relates to you.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself, learn about the student, and find the best way to relate the material to their daily lives or interests.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will tell them a number of different strategies that they can try, as well as ones that work for me when I am studying to see if any of them work.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to introduce the topic and teach it in a way that has never been taught to them before.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Help them find a way to focus on the reading by looking at it little by little in more interactive and engaged reading techniques.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Learning more about them and their interests so I can relate to them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to relate it to their interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Teach the subject. Then, go through an easy example problem. Then, a more difficult example problem. Then, have them work through a problem on their own.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Do increasingly more difficult problems as you learn.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

See what subjects they need help with, and see what has worked and not worked in succeeding in the subject and seeing prior work.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pencil, Paper, Calculator.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Trying to relate the subject to their own life and keeping them from being discouraged.
