Sansthita: Dolton tutor

Certified Tutor

I received a BA in Biological Sciences and Psychology from Rutgers University (New Brunswick). As an undergrad, I was affiliated with the the university writing center which provided tutoring services for students enrolled in a wide variety of writing courses. Through my work at the writing center, I was able to garner valuable experience as a tutor and my passion towards teaching expanded even more. I have prior, extensive experience working with ESL students.I myself moved to this country when I was 13 years old; thus I am able to relate to a lot of the ESL students and their culture-related obstacles. I am pursuing a premed path and I am currently shadowing a developmental pediatrician at the Children's Specialized hospital. This particular experience has helped me develop the ability to work with students who have been diagnosed with ADHD or high functioning ASD. Besides loving all science related things, I also enjoy dancing, painting, and hiking.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy of teaching is to adapt to the student's pace and style of working, using methods that would best complement their personality.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know them and discuss their goals in terms of our session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I could help them come up with useful study techniques that they can apply on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Incorporate things they like into the lesson plan whenever possible. Ask for their input and suggestions.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try a different method or technique. Also try to observe what kind of aids (audio, visual, etc.) help them the most.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Use easier readings and try to pinpoint where exactly are they struggling. Try auditory and visual techniques to break down the passage to derive meaning.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I think I am more successful when I plan my lesson around the individual student's ability and liking.
