I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have a B.S. in Biology and a masters in Biomedical Sciences. And I just finished medical school and received my MD in June 2015. I love education and have been a student for a very long time. I have a tremendous amount of experience when dealing with students. Teaching is one my greatest passions and I really enjoy working with students. Having been in school for a long time helps me relate to the students more. Every student has a different style when it comes to learning, so I would work with them and cater to that.

I am very interested in learning about other cultures and thus love to travel. I have lived and studied abroad. One of my favorite things to do is to walk around the city and explore new places and various neighborhoods. I have made it my goal to visit all of the museums this year. I lead a very healthy life style and enjoy exercising 4-5 times per week. Continued learning is very important therefore I visit the local library a few times per month in order to read different books.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I think everyone has different styles of learning. Some people are visual, while others may prefer discussing everything. I plan to work with the students in terms of styles that work best for them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Talk to them in order to get an understanding of what style of learning works best for them, and what areas they would like to work on. I would like to look at the material as well in order to assess how in-depth my teaching should be.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help them use the lecture material in order to create their own notes and use them to study.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would create practice questions to solidify their knowledge and boost their self-esteem.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would explain the material using common things as examples in order to clarify the concept. I would also use mnemonics.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I usually hold a brief discussion on their style of studying; what type of learning works best for them, whether they're visual vs auditory, etc.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I try to make sense of the material first so that it would easier for them to remember it vs just memorizing.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use every day examples or things that we deal with on a daily basis in order to help them conceptualize certain topics better.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I usually quiz them in order to assess their level of knowledge, and a lot of times they know the material, but they doubt themselves. So I usually hold a discussion about that in order to approach their exam feeling confident and capable of answering all the questions.
