Everyone has their own way of learning. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to learn. I believe education can be fun, engaging, and immersive. At some point, learning must become more than just completing homework assignments and shift more towards building capable individuals ready to support and lead society.
In high school I grappled with this always wondering why and how what I was learning would serve me in 'Real-Life'. It took me a year of college where I was forced to find and build my own passions, no one was going to do it for me. As a psychology major I learned how to perform research not only in my academic field but in other areas as well. I began taking classes in [business, healthcare, french, biology, engineering, law] figuring out how to make learning fun and most importantly useful. At that time, I became entrepreneurial and wanted to soak up as much knowledge as I could.
Around my junior year, I began looking how I could apply my knowledge to the outside work, noticing problems and attempting (earnestly) to solve them. I began going to places none of my friends knew about, attending meetups, hackathons, eventually figuring out other streams of activities that I could use to reinforce my knowledge base.
I did not know what I was doing at the time yet I knew that I needed to sharpen my skills and understanding in whatever capacity I could. I want to help young people, like myself, continue learning -- so we can have a significant impact on our communities and the worlds beyond!

What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching people how to critically think and problem solve will enable them to tackle any problem or challenge they face!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know them, understand their interests, understand their hang ups, and define goals for the tutoring sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Show the student that learning can be fun, engaging, and useful for life outside of classes and pure academics.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Snacks anyone? Intermittent breaks and laughter can go a long way.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Take it to the drawing board or provide a real-life scenario that embodies the concept or skill.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Break down larger paragraphs into smaller sentences, helping them dissect the main points of the article.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Let them provide their own answers and encourage them not to be afraid to make mistakes.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Help them understand interesting and new applications for the knowledge they would be learning.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Ask how they came up with the answer. Make them show their work!
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Repeated practice, and have the student give explanations on the answers they got, both right and wrong.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Either through direct introspection or careful observation during tutoring sessions.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By working one on one, I can observe whether we are going too fast, concepts need more explanation, and so forth. One must be astute to the student's needs and demeanor.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Pencil, paper, and the internet if need be.
