I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am excited to be working with Varsity Tutors and to be able to use my knowledge to help others excel. I have had a passion for the sciences since high school and have a B.S. in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a M.S. in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven. I have always had an interest in teaching but that interest was heightened when I began working as an undergraduate mentor for the biology department at RPI. I was fortunate enough to continue a position as a teaching assistant for the forensic science department at UNH. Currently I work for the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner as a forensic scientist in the forensic biology department, and am working on pursuing a law degree. I believe that education is one of the most important things that one can receive, and it is not always given properly. Tutoring is a chance to supplement this education and to do better. I look forward to the opportunity to help you achieve more and to receive the education you deserve!

What is your teaching philosophy?

If the student still doesn't know the material, I'm not doing my job well enough.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd see what material/subjects they're having difficulties with and why they're having difficulties with it. I'd also like to talk about how they learn best.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to break it down to the very basics and work our way up. I would also use analogies that might help the student understand better.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

If the student can teach me the material, I use that as a good assessment of understanding.
