I am from Houston, Texas. I have always had a love for learning. This was evident when I was young and still exists today. I am the guy in the group who plays random trivia games to learn about new stuff that I have never been exposed to before.
When I started college at Dillard University I discovered that I also have a deep love for teaching. I discovered the ultimate way to assess if you really know something is whether or not you can teach it to someone who may not be familiar with the subject matter. This a great challenge, but I enjoy it. I love to see the look on a person's face when they "get it." I have also found that I too learn new things about the subject that I may not have known before. This is a rewarding experience for me.
The subjects I am most passionate about are Chemistry and Biochemistry. I am most comfortable with these subjects, since they were my majors in undergraduate school. Eventually, I hope to be a college professor full time. I value knowledge because once it is attained it cannot be taken away from someone. If a person decides to use it, it becomes even more valuable.

What is your teaching philosophy?
It's all about the fundamentals. If students can master the basic concepts of any subject, they will be well equipped to deal with more complex concepts.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Talk with them about what they are having difficulty in and why. Access if they have mastered all the basic concepts of the subject matter.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by helping them master the basics and showing them how to use the basics to figure out more complex concepts.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By reminding them of their goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would the present the concept in a way that they would understand. This would require finding out the learning style that suits them and the things they are interested in.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would show them keywords in problems and define what these words mean. We would talk about the question behind the question.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would show them how the subject is relevant to their own life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Questions & answers, practice tests, and having them teach the material to me.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Diligently search out the student's strengths and let them know what they are.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I listen to them.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I change my style and approach by putting myself in their shoes.

Textbooks, pen, paper.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
