Certified Tutor

Hello!
My name is Sarah Mansour. I was lucky to be born in a very multicultural and multilingual background that made me fluent in three languages (English, Arabic and French) and competent in two others! This has given me an open mind and a love of diversity.
I have tutored for a few years now and found the job to be very pleasant. I wish to transmit to my students not only the necessary knowledge to learn a new language but also the appreciation of the culture that lives through it.
I make learning a foreign language a rich and pleasant experience as I am willing to teach in a way tailored to the student's needs.
Feel free to contact me!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I am dedicated to understanding the specific needs of each student, so I may work on them. I am willing to provide the necessary material for each student's learning preference (through hearing, dialogue, visual, or writing).

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I will try to assess their level, as well as find out their learning preference and areas of difficulty.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By providing the necessary material and teaching them the methods for self-learning that best work for them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By making sure that they never lose sight of their goal, and always being available to provide help and encouragement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Establish learning goals and work towards them. Be patient and deliberate with the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Try to break down the meaning of the sentence and pinpoint areas they are having difficulty in. Explain the vocabulary and the sentence structure until the student understands the meaning on their own.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Keeping the student interested and engaged with the material by asking them for feedback, as well as establishing clear learning goals.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By diversifying the material as well as engaging them in dialogue and creative work.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking for their feedback and opinion. Depending on what they have to add to the discussion, I will be able to assess whether or not they have fully understood the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Set attainable goals, offer praise and encouragement for every achievement, keep track of their progress, and make them see the link between the work they do and their progress.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Through constant evaluation and observation of their progress. Keep track of where they make mistakes the most and in which way they learn the fastest.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By providing them the material they need (some students are more comfortable with audio-visual material rather than written for example), and engaging them in their preferred ways (through dialogue or creative work). I also make sure to go at their pace and always keep track of their areas of difficulty in order to focus on what the student needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books, CDs, handouts, websites, videos.
