I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Caroline: Manhattan tutor

Certified Tutor

I received my Bachelor's degree in Biology at Long Island University- Brooklyn Campus in Brooklyn, NY. I am currently working on my BSN at Remington College School of Nursing in Orlando, FL in hopes of becoming a nurse midwife someday. I tutor a broad range of subjects: math, science, and english. But my preferred subject is math. I like the challenge that it brings me; It allows me to "think outside the box" and I love playing with numbers. Tutoring is something that I truly enjoy doing because I strongly believe that education is the key to major success and being able to help someone achieve is what makes it even more entertaining. In my previous experiences as a tutor, my main focus was to make sure that my student felt great about learning and understanding what I was trying to help them with. I want my students to be able to have fun while they learn because it makes everything clearer and the material then becomes simpler. When I am tutoring a student, no matter the age group, I try to teach and explain the material in a way that I would've wanted it done if I was in the student's shoe. I relate it to their daily lives and activities, in my opinion that helps the student understand better. In my spare time, I enjoy watching movies, traveling, and reading. I have a love for dolls, therefore, I try to collect barbies and porcelain dolls.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Have a positive attitude so that it can be fun for both me and the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself and find out the student's strengths and weaknesses. And also make my student comfortable by using an icebreaker.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching the student to have self confidence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Giving breaks in between, and incorporating real life scenarios into the subject.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would be sure not to judge, and to let the student know that it is okay to have difficulties the first time around.
