Jacob: Clearwater tutor

Certified Tutor

In tenth grade (2010) I started tutoring in return for brownies. The next year I officially started tutoring students, primarily in Chemistry and Geometry. The following year I independently designed and taught an introductory Latin course designed to interest sixth grade students. In college I lost much of the free time I had available in high school, and so I began tutoring online. I joined the chemistry club (St. Mary's American Chemical Society - SMACS) and through SMACS I now tutored students weekly, helping students with Organic and General Chemistry. I worked as an Organic Chemistry Lab TA, helping the professor grade student's work, answering their questions, and supervising them during lab to make sure everything ran smoothly.

After graduating from university, I joined the Peace Corps. For two years I taught English as a Foreign Language, working with large classes. I was responsible for creating lesson plans tailored to a variety of student levels and topics.

Throughout my academic career I consistently maintained academic excellence, both enjoying and having a solid grasp of the material. This combination of understanding and love of learning translates into me giving my all to making sure that students get the experience they deserve. I have experience with devising personalized lesson plans for both face-to-face and online sessions. I have tutored for a wide variety of ages over the past nine years, so I am confident interacting with students from sixth grade to college age.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would first learn more about the student's overall academic performance. It's important to understand what their interests and strengths are before you begin learning the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The key to being a strong independent learner is confidence. I help students by showing them what they are truly capable of if given a personalized, one-on-one education. This gives them the chance to achieve academic excellence.
