Research has shown us time and again that the human brain works like a muscle: the more you practice lifting heavy concepts, the stronger your understanding of even the most difficult subjects becomes. This means that with enough dedicated effort, and support from effective educators, anybody can learn anything.
My tutoring style is to ask leading questions and offer hints to help my students make their own connections between what they already know and the new material they're tackling. I've found that people tend to be much smarter than they think they are. Often all it takes is somebody to point out the similarity between that difficult subject you're struggling with and a concept that you already know and are strong in to click on that lightbulb of comprehension. My life's passion is to do just this: to make STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields more accessible to more people, especially those who don't think they're up to the task.
I am passionate about our biology, our oceans, our environment, and educating about them. I studied Cellular, Molecular, and Developmental Biology and Marine Biology at the University of Washington. I volunteer at the Seattle Aquarium, I love to get outdoors and go hiking, and I plan on studying for a Masters in Secondary Education and teaching science at the secondary level.
