Certified Tutor

I recently retired from a career as an actuary and employee benefits manager, and am currently tutoring math. I graduated from St. Joseph's University with a degree in mathematics and completed the requirements as a fellow in the Society of Actuaries. I used my actuarial background in my career in employee benefits where I worked at well-known American companies such as Hershey, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Campbell Soup.

I have volunteered as a tutor at Burlington County College where I have helped many students with algebra and statistics. I believe a strong background in math is necessary for success in your career.

Besides tutoring, I spend my time golfing, learning chess and taking art classes. I am also a die-hard fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. I have had season tickets since 1999.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that the primary goal of education is to learn how to learn, not simply to accumulate knowledge. Once you understand the best way that you can personally succeed, you can learn and master almost anything.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would review the basics of the material, then try to understand where the student needs attention. I would then choose exercises to help the student in his or her problem area.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Motivated students will go out of their way to get more knowledge of subjects they enjoy learning about. For example, I love sports, so any reading or writing that was related to sports was enjoyable and fun for me. Once learning is fun, you want to do it more and more.
