I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Everet

Certified Tutor

I have been tutoring math, statistics, and economics for schools and companies since 2012. I am currently an instructor at NYC College of Technology and pursuing a Ph.D. in economics at the City University of New York. I received my bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, and master's degree (both in economics) from Rutgers University in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

I would describe my tutoring and teaching style as Socratic; that is, asking and answering questions in order to stimulate critical thinking in my students and tutees. I aim to act as a guide for my students, pushing them to obtain answers rather than rely exclusively on others. In doing so, I hope to put my students' intellectual development in their own hands while giving them every resource at my disposal which will help them to succeed.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I would describe my tutoring and teaching style as Socratic; that is, asking and answering questions in order to stimulate critical thinking in my students and tutees. I aim to act as a guide for my students, teaching them how to obtain answers as opposed to relying exclusively on others.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd answer any initial questions they may have, and ask them which topics they would like to begin covering. Once that's been established, I would ask them various questions in order to measure their level of understanding and where they could use improvement.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I foster independent learning by acting as a guide rather than a Google search.
