What is your teaching philosophy?

Ask questions. Ask the student what they know about the subject, and give the student tools to help them solve together, and then on their own.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student, ask open-ended questions about what they want out of a tutor, and the subject studied.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give them ownership of the subject and their work. Help them establish effective study habits, and ask questions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Create a positive learning environment, where we can create small victories, before moving on to bigger challenges. Ask the student to create a dream board!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Look for ways that the student could relate to the skill or concept, through personal or borrowed experiences.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Encourage them to clear their mind from distractions, use highlighters, and take notes if needed. It also helps to talk to others about what was read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Create common ground, to make a friend.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Create a vision of the student mastering this subject, to help them move forward to other activities they are excited about.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask questions about the material to the student. If the student can understand the basics first, they will have confidence to speak about it with others.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Set attainable goals, and establish a basic foundation before moving forward. Encourage and edify the student each session.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Each student is different; maybe the tutor could use resources in evaluations of student's needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Find out how they like to learn, then change your methods to accommodate them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Bring plenty of scratch paper, writing instruments, and calculators if needed. The student's textbook should be the main source of reference.
