What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe teaching should be formulated based on the student. It should be recognized that not all students learn or comprehend the same. Visual learners should be taught using different tools than audio learners.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Prior to a session, I like to find out if the student has any assignments or syllabus so that I may review. If the student is in a class, I like to inquire in the first session about the style of the class and the teacher in said class so that I may know if it is a teacher that requires work to be shown in detail, depending on the subject matter. I also like to be able to show the student how to do the work like the teacher shows them, even if I can teach them an easier or more understandable way for that particular student. Then the student can compare both ways and still be able to show and display their work in the manner and style their instructor desires.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help a student become an independent learner by showing them how to do problems and work with assistance at first. Then I follow it up by giving them samples and problems to do on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I encourage the student along the way; even if they are not quite grasping the subject I show them how they have improved thus far. I also show let them know they were almost right if they were close, but missed a step or two.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I ask the student how they got to their answer so I know where they made a mistake. I also try to find a way to help make it easier for them to understand by helping related it to something they are familiar with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I give them tips to answering comprehension questions. I offer suggestions of what to look for when reading passages.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use problem sets and the student's own material from class. In math, I use formulas to provide the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I have the student explain to me their process to get their answer.
