After obtaining B.S. Degrees in Sociology and Anthropology at Truman State University, I earned a Master's Degree in Education from Lindenwood University. At Lindenwood, I focused on secondary English Education, about which I am quite passionate.
I started my career with Special School District of St. Louis County, working at Pattonville High School. There, I taught English, Algebra, and Social Studies classes in conjunction with general education teachers and other special educators. After ten years with SSD, I decided I was ready for a new challenge. I accepted a position at an urban charter school in St. Louis City, teaching 8th grade Communication Arts and literacy.
My first love in education is the language arts, and I am comfortable tutoring all levels of English and reading classes, including literature, poetry, grammar and writing. I find words absolutely fascinating and I love having a job where I can share the joy that I find in language. I do, however, have an analytical mind, as well, and am equally happy working with students in math, up through Algebra 1.
Since I have worked in special education, my primary strengths as a teacher and tutor are in detailed explanations and step-by-step instruction. This requires patience from me, as well as humor, wit and a mastery of the content. I believe that every learner ought to be given an opportunity to understand and interact with a subject, and I enjoy providing those opportunities to willing students.
I love teaching, I love language, and I love working with people.
When I am not at work, I love to read, especially mysteries and true stories. I also like card games, word puzzles and board games. I am really big on recycling and doing what I can to take care of the environment. And, truth be told, I absolutely love Facebook: viral videos, memes, photos of friends and family, and, of course, Candy Crush!
