I an a graduate of San Diego State University and the University of California Irvine. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Business/Hospitality Management along with a Minor in Sociology from SDSU in 2007. I completed my Master's degree in Public Policy from the University of California Irvine in June of 2013. Prior to returning to graduate school in 2011 I worked in several different capacities, first as a restaurant manager, later in sales for a non-profit organization and most recently for three years in employee benefits specializing in health insurance. My exposure to healthcare reform legislation and long-time interest in the complex interactions between government regulation and private business markets led to my decision to pursue a graduate degree in public policy. I have a wealth of experience working in groups professionally as well as in my academic career, which has taught me to be an excellent collaborator and I am able to quickly develop friendly, productive relationships. While I am experienced in a broad range of subjects, my specialties are economics, algebra, geometry, statistics and related quantitative subjects, as well as academic essay and professional business writing, government and history. I am also well versed in a range of science subjects, particularly physical and earth sciences. In my family education is extremely important. Both of my older siblings are teachers, my sister teaches high school English, my brother teaches middle school Algebra and Geometry. Like them, I genuinely enjoy helping students find new ways to understand and relate to material which they have previously found challenging. In my spare time I enjoy playing guitar, attending concerts, snowboarding, scuba diving and traveling.

New concepts and skills, especially academic skills, have always come very easy to me. This enabled me in school to always lend an extra hand to my friends around me and to help them grow and understand school challenges, including how to solve math problems or to develop topic sentences and outlines for essays.I love the process of relaying information to places and people who could use the extra push. This drive has given me particular long term aspirations. I want to develop a career centered around giving back to communities in need. I see myself in ten years managing my own nonprofit that helps young people in the developing world acquire tech and communication skills, like coding, english writing or data science, empowering them to pursue their own dreams. I was recently accepted to be a Math Fellow for a nonprofit organization called SAGA Innovations. At SAGA, I will be a full time tutor for early high school students studying in underprivileged spaces for the full 2016/2017 academic year. I am excited to have this opportunity, because I can use my love of learning to impact students in spaces that lack the necessary resources. Varsity Tutors is another stepping stone to complement this experience. The more exposure I get to mentoring different types of tutees, the stronger and more prepared I am to be a top tier mentor--a skill I will most definitely need for my long term goals. This is my primary drive to be a Varsity Tutor.

Prior to that, I was a high school Social Studies teacher for fifteen years. I specialize in all Social Studies subjects for all grades, as well as English Language Arts, Reading, Writing, Literature, Humanities, Editing and Revision, Organization and Study Skills, Communication and Public Presentation. I can also assist with Math in grades 1-3 and Science in grades 1-5. At the same time, I'm a historian who has traveled over 40,000 miles around the United States as a Cultural Studies scholar and worked as a volunteer and board member of a local historical society. My short stories and flash fiction have been published in literary outlets, and I am a member of a writer's critique group in which fiction is peer-reviewed and edited. I'm passionate about being an educator because I value the cultivation of a love for lifelong skill-building and believe that knowledge is power. I strive to create a student-centered environment where learning is an enjoyable and meaningful place on the student's path to reaching their fullest potential. I also spend a lot of time just hanging out with my wife and daughter and visiting new food spots all around Austin.

I am an honors student and will also be receiving a secondary degree from the Macaulay Honors College. I have tutored several middle and high school students in Algebra, Calculus, Economics, and SAT Preparation. Many of my students have gone on to do well on the New York State Regents Exams, AP Exams, and SAT and ACT Exams. I am most passionate and enthusiastic about teaching Math because I love how organized and formulaic it is. I have always loved tutoring students because I enjoy seeing them improve in subjects they have previously struggled with.I understand that each student has their own strengths and weaknesses and that some subjects may not be for everyone. This being said, I admit that I used to dislike Math a great deal but I was fortunate to have excellent Math teachers who inspired me and instilled my passion for Math. It is my hope that I can inspire my students in the same way I have been inspired. I would describe my tutoring method as very patient and organized. I always try to understand what the student's strengths and weaknesses are and then go from there. I explain each step carefully and then allow the student to eventually try more difficult topics on their own once I have helped them understand the concepts they need to know.
