I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am an alumna of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. I received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with concentrations in strategic management and operations.

I have been tutoring since my freshman year of high school in 2006. Though I have some experience tutoring math up to the pre-calculus level, I most enjoy helping students with subjects such as English, literature, writing, and public speaking. I believe effective written and verbal communication is essential to personal success in all aspects of life, so anyone looking to improve their reading comprehension and analysis, writing, or speaking skills will find an eager teacher in me.

While in high school, I tutored English and AP Literature, as well as resume composition at a local soup kitchen. In college, I was accepted into the highly competitive critical writing tutoring program, which trains only eleven students per year in tutoring all forms of non-fiction writing. I worked with both undergraduate and graduate students throughout the university in crafting summaries, reports, expository and persuasive essays, theses, resumes, applications, journal entries, memos, and more. Through the tutoring program, I also helped high school students work on their college application essays and prepare for the Writing section of the SAT.

In addition to my experience with critical reading and writing, I also took public speaking courses in high school and college, and was a member of my high school's speech and debate team and my university's parliamentary debate team. Speaking in front of others is a daunting but necessary task everyone must face at some time, and I am more than happy to help you prepare for a class speech, a work report, or simply speaking effectively in groups.

My teaching philosophy is that no one is unable to learn a subject or concept. It might be more difficult for you, you may not enjoy it, and it may take more time to grasp, but you can still learn it. Because of that philosophy, I have developed a very adaptive tutoring style. Not everyone learns best in the same way, and it's up to me as your tutor to find what mode of teaching is most effective for you. I'll actually take the time to get to know you and how you like to learn, whether that be reading, listening, more breaks or fewer, a faster or slower pace, or anything else you may need. I'll try to approach the topic from a perspective that makes sense to you already, rather than forcing you to think a certain way. Ultimately, your success is mine, and I take genuine pleasure in helping my tutees learn to understand and, sometimes, begin to like a topic they've been struggling with.

When I am not tutoring, you can often find me ballroom dancing, reading sci-fi or fantasy novels (I'm currently re-reading Asimov's Foundation series), baking, or watching Netflix; and like many writing fanatics, I am currently working on a novel of my own, so wish me luck!
