I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I currently attend Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA where I am pursuing a double major in French and Philosophy, with a focus on postcolonial thought in the Francophonie. I have been tutoring and working will elementary and middle school kids for 5 years now. I have taught a variety of subjects from Algebra 1 to theater arts. In these five years I have been worked at a nonprofit aimed at equalizing access to education for kids from all over Chicago through an 6 week accelerated summer program. In those 6 weeks, we aimed to strengthen their math, reading, critical thinking and problem solving abilities. However, the most important lessons for high school and college success in that program were often taught outside of the classroom. My philosophy as a tutor is not only to help my clients in their specific subject of need, but to give them the tools that will allow them to take charge of their education. Organization, problem-solving and self-advocacy are the tools that I hope that my client will gain from our sessions so they will develop the confidence to take charge of their education. My teaching style is mostly a student centered approach where I encourage students to play an active and participatory role in their education and I act as a facilitator, using direct instruction when needed. Rather than regurgitating information, I hope that students will be able to understand the core concepts of the lesson at hand. This reasoning is why I especially enjoy teaching literature and reading, because once one has those foundational tools, they can apply it to almost any discipline or subject. Understanding critical thinking and problem solving are lessons that are applicable to everyday life. Outside of academics I enjoy volunteering and traveling. I look forward to helping you develop confidence in pursuing your educational goals
