Certified Tutor

My name is Isaac and I am a tutor who can provide guidance in the specific subjects of AP European History, AP American History, AP World History, and AP American politics as well as the craft of essay writing and research. I am graduate of Reed College with a bachelor of Arts in History though I have also have a broad range of experience in social science and humanities courses as well. I achieved the status of a commended Advanced Placement scholar for scoring fives on all six exams I sat for. Though outside of my primary expertise, I can also provide assistance for English and literature courses. I consider research papers to be my specialty! With my academic experience, I hope I can impart both the practical strategies and broader conceptual knowledge necessary to succeed in both Advanced Placement courses and tests.

Beyond my academic experience I am an avid reader, movie buff, and professional football fan. I am a big fan of Kurt Vonnegut novels, Coen Brothers films, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student is different and learns at their own pace. It is the duty of the teacher to guide the student along their own path to knowledge based on their individual interests, inclinations, and goals.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would try to assess the student’s goals in tutoring and assess their mastery extent of the subject being covered.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would try to relate the material being taught to the individual interests of the student. If the student is further interested by a specific aspect of the material we couldn't cover in full, I'd provide movie or book recommendations related to that topic.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would try to break down the concept into its simplest conceptual parts and relate those parts to concepts already familiar to the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would try to point out key portions of the text or passages which convey the main idea more succinctly.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to relate the material to his or her own lived experience so that the abstract or esoteric is rendered familiar and sympathetic.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask questions related to key concepts being covered at the beginning, middle, and end of the lesson. From there I can understand where there may still be areas of difficulty and work to focus on those areas in subsequent lessons.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would praise their progress and provide specific, encouraging feedback where there's still difficulty with a concept.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I'd ask them where they felt they needed help and provide short answer quizzes to see if they understand the key parts of the lesson.
